The Project
Resin-based composite forms pursue a new material sensibility and aesthetics

UniBodies investigates the potentiality of composite shells in the production of small and intensive proto-architecture. By inventively challenging implicit distinctions between skeleton and skin—modular and monolithic, smooth and porous—these forms advance technological, formal, and material invention. Materially, UniBodies explores the plasticity of composites and unitized construction systems.

Composites, or FRPs (Fiber Reinforced Polymers), have the capacity to synthetically subsume systems: melding, fusing, and embedding discrete components within single body-shells. Furthermore, composites imply an amalgamation of time and procedure. Assembled with heterogenous, anisotropic components to create surfaces that withstand different directional forces, every piece is made entirely of a variable combination of fiber cloth, resin matrix, and flexible core materials. UniBodies exploits the versatility of composites to produce artificial materiality and intensive gradients. Variable degrees of translucency, viscosity, and surface profile are integrally molded and explored through pigmentation and filling of the resin.
