An iconic gateway to the City of West Hollywood integrates a park and multi-layered digital sign
At the intersection of culture and retail, media and art, landscape and architecture, this multidimensional project transitions between the monumental scale of civic architecture and the more intimate scale of the pedestrian experience. The Hinge Portal at 9229-9255 Sunset Blvd. serves as a gateway to West Hollywood on the westernmost portion of the Sunset Strip by combining two ambitions; first, by creating a new landmark that dramatically demarcates the boundary of West Hollywood on a prominent architectural corner with a colossal digital waterfall, and second, by installing a new sidewalk-park and art boardwalk along Sunset Strip.
In the first case, the cascade of media, art, and advertisement leads to a roof garden along the new sign that is an Instagram-ready visual amenity for the neighboring buildings and an advertising opportunity to be read like a billboard at automobile scale. Below, a calm, linear promenade scattered with seating areas, shade trees, and native vegetation contrasts with the excitement above by providing a public art walkway featuring local artists in seasonal exhibition.
