The design of Temporary Space LA aims to emulate a form of micro-urbanity inside the art gallery, creating the feeling of a public realm rather than a traditional art gallery. Our strategy produces attractive and intricate spaces out of existing anomalies such as columns placed in weird positions: these are purposely eaten away by walls and masses to visually simplify the interior as much as to give it spatial meaning. As a result, we imagine the large abstract and figurative paintings by Richard Shelton will not only be viewed as autonomous objects, but as possible and ever-changing articulations of larger architectural constructs.
The informal and almost uneasy relation between the new spaces and the existing structure emphasizes the temporal dimension of the space and its strong cultural mission. The projection “houses” (enclosed areas for digital projection) along with an array of medium and small-scale “objects” such as a reception desk, coffee kiosk, and small exhibitors, organize and interrupt the interior of the space with friendly presences.
