“What I appreciate most about Los Angeles is how open it is to unusual ideas, partly because it’s not overly formal or conservative. You’re not tied to convention here or to ‘we do it this way, and that’s that,’ and that gives you enormous freedom as an artist”
—LA Dance Project Artistic Director, Choreographer and Filmmaker Benjamin Millepied
LA Dance Project’s new center for dance will be a state-of-the art facility exclusively dedicated to contemporary dance, integrating all core activities into one building. Located in the bustling heart of Los Angeles, LA Dance Project’s new home is not just a place to showcase contemporary dance; it’s a hub for artistic creativity and community engagement.
Through the meaningful adaptation of an existing warehouse, the design of the project reflects the neighborhood itself – a mix of local diversity and global cultures. This adaptive reuse project involves the creation of a new and flexible proscenium theater. Anchored by a solid base of exposed salvaged red brick, hinting to the history of the neighborhood and its industrial past, a new dark metal serrated roof gives the project a newfound character and unexpected presence when seen from the street, not revealing much while instilling mystery and public imagination of what’s to come upon entering the space.
Cementing LA Dance Project as a world class cultural venue and the premiere space to perform dance in Los Angeles, LA Dance Project’s new home will capture, transform, and enhance the social vibrancy and material textures of Pico Union.
