The Project

A crystalline oasis in Bali affords a mysterious and relaxing atmosphere

Standing out from the lush scenery of the island and the often-noisy street JL. Raya Uluwatu, Karma Sanctum is a memorable spatial and aesthetic experience in crystalline form. Clad in black volcanic stone with contrasting gold accents in its interior, the building insinuates local Balinese motifs while being distinctly contemporary. Combining the stony solidity of a mineral with the fragile and threaded nature of a piece of cloth, the exterior of the complex is afforded a variegated volume whose upward nature hints at the tradition of local temples. A frayed edge treatment on the rooftop allows the interior to blur naturally between shaded and open areas, creating an impressionistic experience that blends architecture with the surrounding scenery of the island.

The project departs from two main assumptions: to maximize views for individual rooms while providing a highly unique spa and leisure destination. By orienting the suites towards the landscape in the direction of the northwest views, the V-shaped mass concurrently preserves the privacy of a small Buddhist temple at the back of the site. A single loaded corridor serves approximately 40 suites overlooking an open courtyard, which ensures the possibility of cross ventilation. The entry is located at the open corner, where an integrated cascading water feature acts as a liquid screen, separating the visual and sensual experience from the noisy street. Reserved for the use of hotel guests, a podium deck, pool, and pool bar located on the second level afford expansive views of the ocean coastline and lush scenery. A semi-enclosed restaurant is independently accessible from the ground through a separate lobby and elevator core.
