A Not So ‘Lonely Castle’

A museum and visitor center for Qasr Al Farid in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, proposing a careful landform intervention that protects the monument while reshaping the visitor experience around it.

Located near Hegra, Qasr Al Farid, also known as “The Lonely Castle,” stands as one of AlUla’s most iconic monolithic monuments. A Not So ‘Lonely Castle’ responds to the increasing pressures of tourism by proposing a form of radical preservation: limiting direct physical access to the monument while expanding the cultural, spatial, and visual experience of the site.

The project is organized as a partially underground museum and visitor center embedded within the desert landscape. Framed by leaning terraforming walls and an irregular polygonal geometry, the proposal guides visitors through shifting views of the horizon, the geology, and the monument itself. Within this protected landscape, the architecture offers spaces for research, gathering, respite, and reflection, creating a new relationship between preservation, access, and the desert environment.
