We make drawings, images models, objects, buildings & cities. We make Culture.

Identity

We bring a critical and progressive approach to projects across scales, agendas, and geographies, insisting on the cultural and social relevance of architectural form, emerging technologies, and contemporary aesthetics.

PATTERNS is an award-winning and innovation-driven architectural practice led by Argentinian-American partners Georgina Huljich and Marcelo Spina. The firm brings a critical and progressive approach to projects across scales, agendas, and geographies, insisting on the cultural and social relevance of architectural form, emerging technologies, and uncanny aesthetics. Based in Los Angeles, PATTERNS takes advantage of the city’s decidedly global stance and idiosyncratic identity to create equally engaging and speculative architectural projects that operate beyond their functionality to become civic and cultural landmarks in the city and larger the public realm.

Founded in Los Angeles in 2002, the studio approaches design and architecture with a deep working knowledge of nascent technologies and materials integrated into thoughtful and sensible form making. Closely working with each client and their needs as well as the characteristics of a site, each design follows a distinctive approach to massing, articulation, and spatial aesthetics, while responding to their context, considering local materials, building methods, ecological, social, and cultural conditions. Revealing as much as concealing, we believe in an architecture that elicits mystery and imagination from the public as a powerful form of social, cultural, and environmental engagement.

PATTERNS worked across the globe and has built projects in the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia. The studio works on multiple scales and program types that include residential, commercial, mixed-use, cultural, healthcare, hospitality, landscape, and urban planning projects. Notable completed works include the residential building Jujuy Redux in Rosario, Argentina, the mixed-use building Chengdu Eye of Time in Chengdu, China, Prism Gallery in West Hollywood, California, the recently completed Victory Wellness Center in North Hollywood, California, and completed and ongoing private residences in Argentina and California.

Patterns is registered as Women Owned Business, Minority Owned Business, Emerging Business Enterprise, Local Business Enterprise & Small Local Business.

Our recently published book, Mute Icons & other Dichotomies of the Real in Architecture, offers a strong (historical and contemporary) argument and a beautiful image-filled excursion into for architecture ‘s engagement with the public realm.

Ethos

We specializes in architectural design across scales and contexts: from small objects and temporary installations to large buildings and extra-large masterplans; from dense urban cores to exotic and idyllic islands.

As a result, we aim to create original projects that are both unique and accessible, forward looking, and contextual, distinctly contemporary in their formal and material aesthetics and unapologetically timeless in their functional and spatial performance.

Our creative process involves an analytical approach to the specifics of each project, client and context, an imaginative philosophy and unique sensibility to design architectural and urban form and a sophisticated technological solution to its construction and material tectonics. Experience in collaboration with consultants in diverse fields ranging from economic advisors, land use attorneys, to structural engineering and material fabrication allows us to produce increasingly unique projects locally and abroad.

By deploying both pragmatism and imagination during all steps of design, the singularity of our architectural approach is that we can fluidly integrate speculative thinking with an efficient production and delivery. Our vast experience in designing and building architecture worldwide enable us to create projects that maintain a refined balance between theoretical and aesthetic concerns, contemporary demands, and long-lasting values such as functionality and organization. By closely working with clients, we ensure that their vision is materialized in the most progressive and realistic way, so our final design is both distinctive and sustainable, providing their brands worldwide visibility and recognition.

With a diverse identity and a global influence, our team is multicultural and inclusive. This diversity in background and perspective is not just a characteristic; it enhances our creative output and broadens our understanding of the world. Our ethical values shape the identity of the studio and guide our actions.

Collaboration is not just a practice for us; it’s the essence of our creative path. We believe that the best ideas emerge when minds come together, transcending individual viewpoints. Within our studio, we’ve deliberately fostered a culture of open communication and shared responsibility. In this space, titles take a backseat to ideas, encouraging everyone to contribute without hesitation. Each team member’s input is valued equally, creating a sense of ownership and investment in our collective success.

This environment cultivates a strong sense of community, where hierarchy gives way to the collective pursuit of excellence. We are committed to nurturing a fertile ground for creativity, where diverse perspectives converge and interact. It’s in this dynamic interplay that original ideas are sparked, driving our work forward and setting us apart.

Our spirit of collective thinking empowers us to transcend conventional boundaries. We constantly seek to reimagine the world anew, pushing the limits of what’s possible in our projects. By valuing every voice and fostering an inclusive atmosphere, we not only enhance our creative process but also build a studio culture that reflects the richness of our collective identity. This commitment to collaboration and innovation defines who we are and guides us as we strive to make a meaningful impact in our industry.
