The Project
A cascading landscape with repurposed industrial tanks support culture and leisure in Seoul, South Korea

Mapo Culture Depot utilizes the metaphor of the human hand, a composite of uniquely integrated parts, to symbolize life, the future, and humanity. The site, which has an array of industrial tanks, is imprinted with the memory of a past industrial and military period in Korea, especially of the 1973 oil crisis. In relation to the flatland below and the surrounding Maebong Mountain, the impression of a hand shape is apparent. In this scene, one will discover various traces of nature including seasonal changes, creating areas of what appears to be hardened skin, fingerprints, scars, and crease lines as the mountain continues to evolve over time. The idiosyncratic shapes integrate future potentials with traces and memories of the past. This creates a foundation and catalyst for generating a new and more balanced ecosystem, one that can resiliently adapt to emerging future conditions and meet the needs of a modern post-industrial and environmentally friendly global society.
