Budapest House of Hungarian Music

An engaging cultural fortress and sculpted object is grounded deep inside Budapest City Park

Our proposal aims to both seemingly integrate and drastically distinguish itself from its context. Much like the medieval castle within the Budapest City Park, the New House of Hungarian Music [HHMUS] is conceived as a cultural fortress: a single monolithic and semi-autonomous object; a dark shaded crystalline mass conspicuously grounded within the park. Autonomous and contextual at the same time, the project’s position is on one level seemingly compliant to the nearby presence of the neoclassic Varosliget circle, while its posture is relatively indifferent to it as well.

The building surfaces are articulated with an abstract dazzle pattern. The pixelated gradient nature of the building texture makes its presence simultaneously graphically pleasing and tectonically mute. As a result, the building appears iconic: a silent idiosyncratic object in the park.
